The very concept of the United Nations is flawed from its very core. The purpose of a nation-state is to advance its own interests. The UN-as an idea- asks nations to bury their own interests for some un-defined common good.
Perhaps if the world were like the 'age of empires' computer game-with resources distributed evenly across the globe-then the UN ideal might have merit. The obvious problem being, of course, that not all nations have equal national resources. And some nations, i.e. Mexico, with ample national resources are unable to develop economically because of dis functional and corrupt governments.
The UN process-varied nations advancing their own interests to come to a consensus-doesn't even pass the smell test when one considers the representatives at the UN. Many represent tyrannies more interested in advancing their own interests, rather than thoes of their nations. And as with any large bureaucacy, status quo ante is the 'holy grail'; C.Y.A. is the rule of the day; petty competition and petty disputes are the motivating factors; personalities rule the day.
The function of the UN is to destroy the nation-state. But, even if nation-state went the way of the dinosaur, and supar-national organizations beame the rule, peoples-cultures, societies, tribes-would continue to comlete to advance parochial interests. The UN is contrary to human nature and, therefore, incable of sering the interesta of humanity. (The UN assumes that people can be trained tonot organize by shared interests, beliefs, languages, history, culture, etcetera).
